ABOUT ME
I am currently an assistant professor in Political Science department in Tunghai
University (東海大學政治系助理教授) in Taichung, Taiwan. My research interests include
political participation, political psychology, educational policy, and quantitative
methods. Quantitative research is always my favorite. I grew up in Taitung,
Taiwan and went to Taipei for my college education; I received a bachelor's
degree in Journalism in Chinese Cultural University in 2001. After two years
of compulsory military service in Taiwan Coast Guard, I entered University of
Nebraska at Lincoln (UNL) in the United States for an advanced degree. I received
my doctorate degree at UNL in December, 2008, and my dissertation was about
individualism and civic engagement in the US.
As a big fan of American culture, I am interested in exploring issues related
to major components of the American dream. My current research interest has
to do with the content of individualism and its political implication, namely,
political participation. I have spent several years trying to create a typology
that is comprised of different types of individualism and empirically test them.
If you have any questions for me or you are interested in my current projects,
please don't hesitate to email me. I am very glad to engage in a conversation
with you.

NATIONAL SCIENCE COUNCIL PROJECT (國科會計畫)
個人主義、集體主義與政治參與/Individualism, Collectivism and Political Participation
in Taiwan
編號:99-2410-H-029-005(新人計畫)
This project proposal aims to answer a key question: are Taiwanese
collectivistic or
individualistic? On the one hand, Taiwanese seem to be collectivistic when it
comes to
familism, hierarch in workplace and school, and vulnerability to peer group
pressure. On the
other hand, Taiwanese seem to be self-centered and individualistic regarding
contribution to
public goods. Chinese philosophers like Lian Qichao would argue against the
individualism to
which Chinese people subscribe and argue that it will retard the development
of the Chinese
society. In solving the myth regarding whether or not Taiwanese is individualistic
or collectivism,
my answer is that it depends. In public domain, Taiwanese tend to be individualistic
and it is
represented as a social pattern that Taiwanese people do not have the idea of
“public goods”
and individuals in Taiwanese society are utility maximizes and try to get what
they want; very
few people are willing to contribute tokens into the public pool. In private
places, with
families and friends who share the same ethnic background, however, Taiwanese
are willing
to gather so as to gain benefits and attain common goals. This is what I call
the “ambivalence
of collectivism”.What is important is that Taiwanese have the idea of socially
gathering in
private place and due to this idea they tend to participate in politics. This
is hypothetically
why there is an unusually high political participation level in Taiwan, compared
with that in
the United States and Europe. All in all, this research proposal aims to study
the connection
between political participation and collectivism belief in Taiwan.
